OBJECT_DESCRIPTION_EN :

This scenic device has a rotating handle that allows the box to gradually open, revealing its interior, which symbolizes experiences at sea.

This music box invites the audience to enter a miniaturist universe, where the puppets are very small in scale and the microcosm of human experience can be seen in the macrocosm of the sea. The characters present are Simão Salgado and Sebastião Salvador, aboard a small boat on the high seas. Simão is a child who has never had contact with the sea, and Sebastião is an old fisherman who no longer goes to sea.

The narrative unfolds like a symbolic journey, illustrating the life of the people of the sea. Through the wisdom and beliefs of the experienced fisherman Sebastião and the innocence of Simão, the audience is drawn into an adventure that can be real or imaginary. The use of a reduced scale in the puppets amplifies the narrative, emphasizing the vastness and depth of the maritime environment compared to the smallness and vulnerability of human existence. This choice of scale can be seen as a metaphor for the human condition, in which individuals are often diminished by the immensity of nature.

The concept of the “music box” serves as a metaphor for the stories and traditions passed down from generation to generation within the fishing community. Just as the crank of the box has to be turned to activate the melody, the transmission of knowledge from the old fisherman to the child is essential for the continuation of the cultural heritage.

The show touches on themes such as the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, the interaction between the real and the imaginary and the human connection with the natural world. These themes resonate with a broader issue, the preservation of cultural identity.
